davidclarkmooreThe Artist

I completed high school in New York and moved on to spend six months in film school. I am now at Hope College studying towards an English and Communications double major, with a semester term abroad studying English Literature at Oxford University.

I have a passion for philanthropic and faith-based work that incites my search for new challenges and interesting projects to serve people in their needs. I am eager to integrate the writing of story with my enthusiasm for design, video production, and photography. My goal is to use those skills to empower, leaving behind western hegemony, and begin with partnership and humility to work together with those across the globe to develop sustainable solutions.

Some Overall Thoughts

I should note that I never talked with or even formally greeted women in Yemen. It was a weird reality and it wasn’t my intention, but it happened. Partly because I was a Westerner but also because Yemen’s culture; while in certain places relaxed on Islamic law, Yemen is mostly the center of the Arab world accessible to the West.

Most Women I saw were covered from head to toe, but I did notice them making their mark with stylish handbags, high heels under their hijab, eyeliner, etc… Signs of natural emotional leanings and interests beneath a covering that strips them of any identity to the public eye was comforting. It was comforting, because they were still reaching out to be human. Yemen is extremely patriarchal, but who are we to condemn as Westerners. I would say it’s prominent thought. It’s part of Yemeni life and it’s engrained in Islam.

davidmoore_2526The most striking thing about Yemen was that there seemed little distinction between religion and life. To me, this was a challenge to my own faith, but it also revealed how Islam is “cradle to the grave.” At times, other faiths of the World are this way, but not always, I’m not convinced either that it denotes inherent value. We had several discussions about Islam with Muslims on the street. They surprisingly adapted a Christian meta-narrative and evangelical lingo to enhance their earshot. It was very interesting to hear and discuss. Most of all, this trip was a fantastic learning experience. I never did encounter any fundamentalists or extremists and most disowned any terrorist groups as heretics. I discovered that Yemeni are people with hearts and souls rather than anything else that a Western guise can easily create. While the differences between myself and the people of Yemen are great, I’ll never forget this experience and will continually learn from my time with them.

Art Policy

Lemonjello’s displays art by local area artists only.

We usually have work by a single artist at a time on a bi-monthly rotation, but we do have multiple artist shows occasionally.

Lemonjello’s does not pay you to display your work, but also won’t take a commission if you sell a piece. If you do sell a piece while it is on display at our store, we ask that you leave it up until the end of the originally agreed upon display time. You are not required to list your pieces for sale.

We require an artist bio/statement to display in the store and on our webpage. You may also provide a digital copy of one piece for the website.

You must provide typed labels for your pieces including: title, your name, media, price (or note that it’s not for sale), and we highly suggest you include contact info (an e-mail, phone #, and/or webpage).

Your pieces must be “gallery ready” when it comes time to hang them, meaning that they are clean, matted and preferably framed. Framed pieces are generally considered over un-framed pieces. As of right now, we can only display wall hung art, no free standing sculptures please. YOUR PIECES MUST HAVE HANGERS ON THE BACK! Wire is preferred. No sawtooth hangers please.

If/when we do decide to display your work, we will set up a date and time with you to hang the art, and a date and time to take it down. If you are not present to hang your art, we will hang something else in it’s place. If you’re not present to take it down, and don’t set up another arrangement with us, we will take it down for you and you will be charged a $25 service charge for our time and storage.

In the event that your matting/framing is damaged while in our store, we will have it replaced/repaired at the local frame shop of our choice. If the art itself is damaged, Lemonjello’s will buy it at a fair market price. In the event that your art is not priced, it’s fair market value will be assessed by a local gallery of our choice.

Keep in mind that we are an all ages venue. We retain the right to refuse art if we feel that it does not reflect the style of the shop or if we feel that it is distasteful or inappropriate for our store.

Download the pdf application and turn it in at the store for consideration.
